Rotating Lamp of Shadows
I want to make a rotating lamp that will cast shadows around a room but the mechanics of it aren't really working out for me.

Permanent Atomic Shadows
When I met with Paul he pointed out that a jacket is a-morphic, and that the photos I had taken of my jacket reminded him of the atomic shadows left behind the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. So I decided to create some permanent shadows myself of the people featured in my recordings.
Unfortunately though it would seem the whole of Limerick ran out of black pvc tape at once so this was as far as I got with this shadow.
My next attempt was a silhouette made out of black bags but I didn't like the result.

Paper Jacket
Had a 3d workshop with Elaine where we tried to make a few paper jackets.
We then used one to cast an impressive shadow.

Christian Boltanski
Roisin suggested Christian Boltanski to me because she thought one of my sketches looked like a piece of his but when I went to research him I was blown away by how alike his work is to my project, the jackets, recordings, shadow, everything.
Here is an interview given by Boltanski with Sarah Rosenbaum-Kranson:

No Man's Land is a piece by Christian Boltanski about mortality using discarded clothing and recordings of peoples heartbeats, this is the kind of impact I want my piece to have but on a smaller scale.
Here is a description of the exhibition given in the guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2010/jan/13/christain-boltanski-grand-palais-paris
CHRISTIAN BOLTANSKI "La vie possible" 15 May – 06 September 2009 This is the piece that reminded Roisin of my sketches and I am now looking at incorporating cast shadows into my work. |
