So looks like that late-night chipper binge actually worked in my favour since it meant I conveniently ended up with a brown paper bag to use, I would like to do this with a free-standing bag though so its more 3d.

After a really quick tutorial with Elaine I decided to look into a type of abstract expression of noise. A scream is a splash of deep black, a shout is a solid staccato of midnight blue scratched with underlying back, a bang could be a violent clash of two strong resonating lines with pure white in the centre and a hum is a gentle fade from pink to white.

If you were masking tape where would you live?

Again this is taken from one of the conversations I recorded, what I'd like to do is take these masking tape strips that read
"If you were masking tape where would you live?"
and place them across the city and college, photograph them and if I get really lucky somebody might even answer.

My roommate suggested the idea of using print to represent conversations and how they get so easily jumbled up, I want to talk to Des about maybe doing a simple print piece in either different colours or varying shades of black, white and grey.

Elaine suggested the same idea only by printing onto acetate, and by using sticky pads to raise up each acetate sheet it could give it an interesting 3d effect.

Another concept Elaine suggested was to look into how fonts represent conversation, do capital letters suggest shouting? if you gradually increase the size of the font does it give it a questioning air? can dialects be represented?

I listened back to some of the conversations I recorded and jotted down some of the phrases from them, I wanted to look at how I could illustrate those conversations in a way that reflected their subject matter.























One of the transcripts was:

-If you were masking tape where would you live?-Shop-Do I have any in my bag?-No cause I don't do like any drawing here...

Hence the idea of masking tape that reads "if you were masking tape where would you live" and a bag that says "Do I have any in my bag?"

This piece was inspired by this snippet I picked up from one of the recordings:

-My toast was really dry this morning
-I know toast is generally dry but you see I toasted it and then I went to the bathroom so I toasted it again just to warm it...

The cardboard cut out is the stencil I used for the toast.








Just a quick tester piece.

Just a quick little look into blacking out faces, excepting the mouth. I really like the idea that one of the tv screens would feature 2 mouths, possibly speaking over each other.

Of course another possibility is that all of the tv screens would feature 2 mouths conversing, that would set the whole concept further from merely being a retelling and would better include my theme of "Spaces in Conversation".

Just looking into lips, I've been looking into "Not I" by Samuel Beckett where the concentration is on the mouth so I just did a quick study of my own mouth.

In the picture on the left both drawings were done by layering, pencil, chalk, pen and colouring pencil on top of an imprint of my lips left by lipstick.

Brainstorming

Had a brainstorming session with my roommate and we came up with a few ways of incorporating conversations more into my work, really like the idea of incorporating print in.
